Federal funding package opens door for 47th St & I-135 Interchange project.
The Wichita area received Federal Grants for transportation projects, including $23 million to rebuild and upgrade the interchange at 47th Street South, I-135 and the Kansas Turnpike.
Councilman Jim Skelton successfully pushed for a revitalization of the 47th & I-135 Interchange area. This will become a defining part of South Wichita which is consistent with neighborhood plans created by area citizens and stakeholders. The possibilities include new shopping areas, medical offices, and roadway and drainage improvements.
This revitalization will bring benefits to the entire city. There are many safety concerns to be improved on in that area. The primary safety concern in the #1 highest traveled structurally deficient bridge in Sedgwick County. Other concerns are the lack of sidewalks, traffic jams, and lack of proper signalization.
Reconstructing this interchange will open the door for economic development in the area. This would lead to a redevelopment of an entryway into the city, as well as proper infrastructure for the development of shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.
