Wichita has historically experienced flooding problems with the Gypsum and Dry Creek Basins, located in the southeast part of the city. Both creek basins are highly urbanized with miles of channel.
The creation of smaller floodplains give the residents the flood protection they deserve, along with increased property values and community safety.
Councilman Jim Skelton has rallied for further improvement to the drainage system of South Wichita. One of his primary goals was to lower the flood elevations. He also has pushed for the removal of concrete debris and replace it with nice rocks and landscaping.
The Gypsum Creek has two sections that received improvements. One section is the creek between Pawnee and Woodlawn, the other is west of Hillside to the Wichita Drainage Canal.
The Pawnee to Woodlawn project removed a bottleneck in the creek which was the main cause of neighborhood flooding. This project along the Gypsum creek also included a new pedestrian bridge.
The Gypsum Creek project west of Hillside provided the neighborhood a greaty improved chanel with sloping banks, trees and landscaping. This project also lowered area flood elevations.
